Grounding or Earthing: Not Just Hippy-Dippy Bullshit

So, what the hell is grounding?

Grounding (or earthing) is basically just connecting your body to the natural earth—grass, sand, moss, dirt. It’s thought to help kick out free radicals, reset your body’s electrical state, and give you a much-needed reboot.

Now, I get it—it sounds like woo-woo crap. But think about your average day: you’re surrounded by synthetic everything. Carpet, concrete, vinyl floors. Shoes with soles made of plastic or rubber. When’s the last time your bare skin actually touched the earth that, you know, literally keeps us alive? We weren’t designed to walk around on plastic 24/7. And surprise—your body actually notices when you reconnect with the ground beneath you.

Exactly what are the perks?

  • Less inflammation (grounding helps neutralize free radicals)

  • Better sleep (circadian rhythm reset + lower cortisol)

  • Stress relief (less cortisol means a better mood)

  • Mood boost (hello, serotonin)

  • Pain relief (often linked to less inflammation)

  • Improved circulation (better blood flow)

  • Immune support (because your body works better when it’s not in overdrive)

Maybe the science isn’t 100% nailed down yet—but maybe that’s not the point. Maybe our bodies need the earth more than we realize. Maybe we’re hardwired to crave that connection, and modern life keeps ripping it away.

But what if you can’t just frolic barefoot all day?

Enter: grounding sheets. Yep, they make bed sheets that are woven with conductive materials (like silver threads) and plug into a grounded outlet in your house. Sounds wild, but the idea is to mimic the same electrical exchange you’d get if you were snoozing under the stars with your skin on the dirt. Except you get to do it in your comfy bed without bug spray or questionable campground bathrooms.

People swear by them for deeper sleep, less pain, and better energy. Worst case? You bought yourself some nice sheets. Best case? You start waking up feeling like your body finally got the memo that it’s connected to planet Earth. We love ours from GroundingWell. There have been times when my GroundingWell sheet wasn’t quite dry in time to make our bed so we reverted back to our standard fitted sheet. Both of us always make it a point to get that GroundingWell sheet back on our bed for the next night’s sleep. We both feel like we sleep better, wake up more well-rested and just generally feel better. If you decide to take a chance on one, make sure you use the discount code: GWKRISTIN10 for 10% off your order.

So, call it grounding, call it earthing, call it barefoot hippie nonsense if you want. Just try it. Kick off your shoes, step in the grass, and see how your body feels when it remembers what it’s been missing.
